Story · The flying horse and the bamboo-leaf soldiers

History

A cluster of great mounds of Silla kings and nobles. A tomb excavated in 1973 held a saddle flap painted with a flying horse, which gave it the name Cheonmachong, the Heavenly Horse Tomb. You can walk inside it.

Hwangnam Daechong in the park is a double mound, two tombs joined north to south, and the largest ancient tomb in Gyeongju. The south mound is thought to be a king’s and the north mound, where a gold crown was found, his queen’s.

Legend

When enemies attacked, soldiers with bamboo leaves tucked behind their ears appeared and helped Silla. After they vanished, bamboo leaves were found piled before the tomb of King Michu, and the tomb came to be called Jukhyeonneung, it is said.
