Story · Kim Dae-seong’s two sets of parents
History
According to the Samguk yusa, Kim Dae-seong began building it in 751. He died in 774 before it was finished, and the state completed it. The wooden halls burned during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s; the stone stairways and the two pagodas date from Silla. It became a World Heritage Site with Seokguram in 1995.
In 1966, while Seokgatap pagoda was being taken apart for repair after grave robbers damaged it, a scroll of the Mugujeonggwang Great Dharani Sutra was found inside. It is counted among the oldest surviving woodblock prints in the world.
Legend
Kim Dae-seong is said to have had parents in two lives. He built Bulguksa for his parents in this life and Seokguram for those of his previous life, the story goes.
