Story · A cave built from cut stone
History
It is not carved into a cliff but built from fitted granite blocks, an artificial grotto. Its original name was Seokbulsa. Kim Dae-seong began it together with Bulguksa, and the two became a World Heritage Site in 1995.
During Japanese rule, in 1913–1915, the grotto was dismantled and reassembled with a cement shell over it. Damp and condensation inside followed, and it was extensively repaired again in the 1960s.
Legend
Kim Dae-seong is said to have built it for his parents of a previous life.
