Story · One king, five mounds
History
Tradition holds these are the tombs of Bak Hyeokgeose, founder of Silla, his queen Aryeong, and kings Namhae, Yuri and Pasa. Judging by their form, some scholars doubt who really lies here.
Legend
Seven days after Hyeokgeose rose to heaven, his body is said to have fallen to earth in five parts. When people tried to bury them together a great serpent stopped them, so they were buried apart, and the tombs were also called Sareung, the Serpent Tombs.
Aryeongjeong, a well inside the grounds, is said to be where Queen Aryeong was born, from the side of a rooster-dragon that appeared beside it. The baby had lips like a beak, which fell away when she was bathed in a stream, the story goes.
