Story · The yellow dragon and the nine-storey pagoda
History
In 645, under Queen Seondeok, the Baekje master builder Abiji was brought in to raise a nine-storey wooden pagoda about 80 m tall, one of Silla’s Three Treasures. Temple and pagoda burned when the Mongols invaded in 1238; only the site remains.
Legend
In 553 King Jinheung set out to build a new palace here, but a yellow dragon appeared, so he built a temple instead and named it Hwangnyongsa, Yellow Dragon Temple, it is said.
