Story · The pond that holds the moon
History
The pond was dug in 674, under King Munmu. Long known as Anapji, it was renamed in 2011 after excavations turned up pottery inscribed “Wolji”. Records say Silla received Wang Geon, founder of Goryeo, at the Imhaejeon hall here in 931.
In 1975 a fourteen-sided oak die, the juryeonggu, was found in the pond bed. Each face carries a drinking-party forfeit such as “sing a song” or “drink two cups at once”. The original burned during conservation; only replicas survive.
