Story · The queen who foresaw her death
History
The tomb of Queen Seondeok (r. 632–647), Silla’s first queen regnant, on the southern peak of Nangsan hill.
Legend
The queen named the day of her death and asked to be buried in Trayastrimsa heaven, which she said lay on the south side of Nangsan. Years later King Munmu built Sacheonwangsa, the Temple of the Four Heavenly Kings, below the tomb, and the scriptures place Trayastrimsa above the heaven of the Four Kings, so the story goes.
When a painting of peonies and their seeds arrived from Tang China, the young Deokman, later Queen Seondeok, noticed there were no butterflies in the picture and said the flowers would have no scent. When the seeds were planted, they had none, it is said.
